Lawrence Kitchen

Born: June 29th, 1926

Passed on: August 15th, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence Kitchen, aged 96 on August 15th, 2022. He passed at home surrounded by family. At his request, his body was donated to Dalhousie University for Science.

Lawrence is predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Narey) Kitchen and his daughter Penelope Jane Victoria Kitchen, his parents, John and Carrie Kitchen and his brother, Morris Kitchen.

He is survived by his son Peter Kitchen, his daughter Patricia (Phonchareon) and her husband Dang Phonchareon, and his five grandchildren; Jason Phonchareon, Fiona Kitchen, Joshua Phonchareon, Finnian Kitchen and Grady Kitchen.

Lawrence or Laurie as he was known in his early days was a keen cyclist, an artist, and a lover of music. He had an appetite for adventure and travel which led him from Bradford England, where he was born to settle in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was a kind and patient man, always willing to help anyone in need. We all will miss his wit, wisdom and calming presence in our lives..

The following is an excerpt about Lawrence from the book Bevin Boy: A Relunctant Miner, written by his friend, cyclist and fellow miner, Reg Taylor. Reg calls him "Luke" in the book.

"I had become friendly with another Bevin Boy who was a keen cyclist. For some reason he was known as Luke - I never really found out why. There was something of the explorer in him. At weekends he would be off on his bike putting in unbelievable distances and finding out about the countryside in a way that was impossible in any other way but on a bike."

Donations in Lawrence's memory may be made at either of the following charities:
